An Urbanicity Alert

Join the 54th ISOCARP World Planning Congress in Bodø, Norway from 1-5 October 2018

The congress theme is Cool Planning: Changing Climate and Our Urban Future”, and we will discuss the burning issues of climate change, resilience, disaster mitigation, planning, adaptation and more with regard to urban planning, design, technology, infrastructure and many more. We expect a large turnout of experts on the theme, with workshops, keynote speeches and also the usual ISOCARP programme, including two Young Professional Planners workshops. There will be many opportunities for networking as well.

This year's keynote speakers are Jeremy Rifkin, Peter Newman and Herbert Girardet. Jeremy Rifkin will be joining us via live stream, but Q&A interaction will be possible.

Have a look at the congress programme. There will be over 200 presentations given across the following six parallel Congress Tracks:

  • THE GLOBAL VIEW: Climate Change Impacts, Sustainability and Resilience
  • SPOTLIGHT CITIES: Planning for Coastal Cities, Remote Towns, and High North Cities
  • CLIMATE-PROOF CITIES: Planning for Weather, Water, Food and Energy
  • TECHNOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE: Clean, Green, Smart and Resilient
  • SOCIAL NETWORKS: Citizen Participation, Urban Governance and Cultural Transformation
  • CONTEMPORARY PLANNING PRACTICE: Projects and Paradigms.

The Congress online paper platform is open and contributions can be sorted and searched by track, author, keywords and more. Short summaries of the presentations are available in the detailed programme.
Apart from that special sessions will be held including: presentations of ISOCARP programmes; citizen participation for a sustainable city transition - the case of Bodø ByLab; the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Modernization organises a session on UN Sustainable Development Goals; and UN-Habitat co-organises a session on Planners for Climate Action.

There will be mentoring and networking possibilities and at the same time participants can enjoy the great Norwegian hospitality and food. Our Norwegian colleagues have organised an extensive evening social programme each day, with the Congress Dinner and Award Ceremony on the last night. Access to all events is included in the congress registration.

On top of that there will be three ISOCARP meetings: the ISOCARP Open Forum, where all delegates can learn about ISOCARP and discuss the future of the society; a very Special General Meeting (members only) where the new constitution will be discussed and voted on – this will be first time ever online meeting with members all over the world; and finally the Annual General Meeting of ISOCARP Members.

The congress will start on Monday 1 October with technical tours. Spaces are limited so please register soon. There are opportunities to book pre- or post-congress tours.
Sponsoring and exhibition opportunities are still open.
